APY Lands Main Access Road

South Australia

About This Project

The Department of Transport, Planning and Infrastructure (DPTI) has awarded GREENHILL the contract to design nearly 150km of rural road in South Australia’s Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands.

The project involves the detailed design and documentation of the main access road between Kaltjiti (Fregon) and Iwantja (Indulkana) including the Mimili Airstrip access road. GREENHILL was also engaged to facilitate the documentation of an additional 50km of road designed internally by DPTI.

The contract forms part of a $106.25 million joint Commonwealth and State government project to upgrade around 210km of road in the APY Lands over a period of five years.

The road upgrade is an important project which aims to improve the living standards of the Anangu people by improving access to essential services and facilities.

Currently, the main access road is often inaccessible due to flooding as sections of the road are below the natural surface level.

This road upgrade will decrease the impact of flooding and improve safety, as well as deliver reduced travel times and vehicle operating costs.

The construction is scheduled for completion in June, 2019.
